Orange County Partnership for Young Children North Carolina Smart Start

Our History

  • 1993-1994
    Smart Start begins in North Carolina. The Partnership becomes the first in state to pioneer the new early childhood program; awards over $1 million in community grants.
  • 1996
    Vice President Al Gore and Gov. Jim Hunt tour local center to see a model child care program developed by the Partnership.
  • 1998
    Partnership releases its special report on the needs of the Latino children and families, creates special funding initiative and launches El Centro Latino.
  • 1999
    Partnership funding grows to nearly $4 million. Partnering agencies raise over 20% in match contributions.
  • 2000
    Partnership presents Smart Start Family Fest- a day of fun and learning for families.
  • 2001
    Gov. Easley creates More at Four program. Partnership is selected to launch Orange County's program serving 120 disadvantage four year olds.
  • 2004
    Partnership receives honor for its excellent financial track record and service to young children.
  • 2006
    Partnership receives PBIS Incentive Award, for achieving the highest standards in the area of Early Childhood Care, from NC Partnership for Children.
  • 2007
    The Partnership begins raising funds for the Healthy Kids Campaign. The campaign is a broad-based community initiative to stop the trend of childhood obesity by funding and starting 5 collaborative programs.
  • 2008
    Three Healthy Kids Campaign programs were started this year; The Growing Healthy Kids project, the ABCs of Good Health, and Move It!. All of these programs were created by a community wide collaborative and have already shown progress in helping families and children lead happier, healthier lives.
  • 2009
    The Healthy Kids Campaign programs continue to have a positive effect on young children in Orange Co. Leveraging this progress the Partnership in collaboration with UNC-Chapel Hill secured a two year national Grant from Salud America! and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Addtionally Smart Start and More at Four continue to strive to give our children and families the highest quality care and education in the state.
