Partnership Celebrates Launch of Three New Programs

In just a year and a half of fundraising, the Orange County Partnership for Young Children and its Healthy Kids Campaign has raised $250,000. Contributions came from individuals, corporations, foundations, and several different local organizations and governments. The contributions have been used to create three new programs aimed at fighting childhood obesity and helping young children live healthier, more active lifestyles.

The Healthy Kids Campaign along with its new programs will be celebrated Saturday, June 7 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Carrboro Elementary School. The event will be hosted by the Partnership along with campaign cabinet member Representative Verla Insko who will be recognizing the top contributors. The event also includes presentations by the new programs, a kids cooking demonstration, and a tour of one of the community gardens which is located at the Carrboro Elementary School. Photos will be permitted.

The three new programs all focus on preventing child obesity by increasing opportunities for children to eat smart and move more. The ABCs of Good Health, funded by a grant from the North Carolina Partnership for Children, has instituted the Nutritional and Physical Self Assessment in Child Care (NAPSACC) curriculum. The curriculum will aid pre-schools in creating physical activity programs, and increasing knowledge and consumption of healthy foods. Our second program is the Growing Healthy Kids Project, funded by a grant from the North Carolina Health and Wellness Trust Fund, which has created two new community gardens in Carrboro. These gardens are very popular and give families an opportunity to learn about gardening and fresh fruits and vegetables. Our final program is the Move It! project which will help create and fund scholarships for low income children to attend local physical activity programs and camps.

"All of these projects have created such a collaborative effort between so many differentorganizations. It is wonderful to have this kind of cooperation aimed at such a prevalent issue facing our children's health, " said Jay Bryan, The Partnership's Chair of the Board of Directors.
